The platform's design prioritizes user experience, making it effortless to store, organize and retrieve passwords securely.

This feature promotes good password hygiene practices by encouraging the use of complex and diverse passwords.

Researcher's Summary:

1Password is a leading password manager that offers password generation, management and access control. Compared to its competitors, LastPass and Dashlane, 1Password stands out with its seamless item sharing capabilities, robust security measures like Security Keys and Travel Mode, and user-friendly interface.

While 1Passwords primarily focuses on storing passwords, it extends the same level of security to other sensitive information like credit card details, addresses and driver’s licenses. You can also use 2FA for sites that support it, such as Etsy and Amazon. Also, it protects developer secrets like API tokens and SSH keys.

I was impressed with its item sharing module. Unlike LastPass, 1Password allows you to share your vaults or specific items with anyone, even if they don’t use 1Password. In addition to securely sharing files, you can set link expiry dates and customize access permissions.

For business managers and IT administrators, 1Password helps automate everyday administrative tasks, create new users and groups, and manage team access. You can also integrate 1Password Business with identity providers like OneLogin and Okta.

Overall, the platform is best suited for both individuals and businesses to streamline password management and secure digital assets. While several users complained about the lack of a free version, it’s likely a worthwhile investment for those who prioritize cybersecurity and password convenience.

Key Features

  • End-to-End Encryption: 1Password uses the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256) to scramble data into unreadable ciphertext, ensuring only authorized users with the correct decryption key can access it.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): This feature adds an extra layer of security by requiring users to provide multiple forms of verification, such as a password and a fingerprint or security token, to access their account.
  • Password Generator: You can create strong, unique passwords that are difficult for hackers to guess, helping users improve their overall password security. It also generates memorable phrases and PIN codes as passwords.
  • Secret Key: It provides a 34-character security code unique to each user account that adds an additional layer of encryption to the user's data.
  • AutoFill: 1Password can automatically fill in your personal information, credit card details and addresses when shopping online or signing up for services, saving you time and effort.
  • Digital Wallet: Beyond passwords, 1Password can securely store credit card information, receipts and notes. It acts as a digital wallet for all your important information.
  • Secure Password Sharing: It allows users to share passwords and other sensitive information with others in a secure manner, even if the recipient does not use 1Password.
  • Audit and Alerts: Receive alerts for compromised, weak or reused passwords and perform security audits to maintain strong password hygiene across all your accounts.
  • Single Sign On (SSO) Integration: The team and business versions can integrate with Unlock with SSO, allowing team members to sign in to their 1Password Business account with the username and password from their identity provider.
  • Travel Mode: This feature allows users to temporarily remove sensitive data from their devices when crossing borders or traveling to locations with heightened security risks.
  • Watchtower Service: The solution continuously monitors for data breaches and other security vulnerabilities that may affect user accounts and alerts users to take necessary actions, such as changing compromised passwords.

See It in Action: From Password Generation To Sharing

I tested 1Password in Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Unlike some other browser-based password managers, it runs smoothly in all of them and offers a two-click autofill option for all login purposes. I simply clicked the small 1Password button in the corner and selected the saved login details from the dropdown menu.

I also tested several other significant features and capabilities, let’s go through them one by one.

Password Generation

I found 1Password’s password generation feature to be straightforward. It offers the standard random password generation feature and also includes a memorable password option that creates an easy-to-remember phrase. You can even choose a PIN code as your password and customize the number of digits. This flexibility makes it easy to find the perfect password for your websites.

Storage Vault

The vault system is incredibly versatile. I could create multiple vaults for different categories or purposes, like credit cards or driving licenses, to keep digital assets and passwords neatly compartmentalized. Additionally, it provides full control over vaults, with the ability to edit, share or delete specific items as needed.

Data Sharing

While password generation and storage are essential, secure sharing is equally important, if not more. I was impressed by how easily 1Password allows you to share items with others. Whether you need to share entire vaults or specific items, the platform provides simple solutions for all. For specific items, you can share the link and decide measures like how long it will take for the link to expire and who can access the link.

The thing I liked most about this feature is that you can share the items with anybody, even if they don’t use 1Password. This is a welcome change, as most other password managers only allow sharing with users of the same platform.

Autofill

Once I saved the sign-in information for a website in 1Password, logging in became a breeze. A pop-up button appears in the corner of the username and password fields when you click on either. I clicked the small 1Password logo button, and it displayed my saved details. When I selected them, the password manager autofilled my login credentials. I didn’t have to click on the Chrome extension.

Filling out forms is also simple. I noticed the same pop-up button, and clicking it displayed two of my saved credentials. I selected one, and it automatically filled in the necessary fields, like my name, email address and company name.

Watchtower Security Check

I created a weak password in Etsy to test 1Password’s notification feature. As expected, it immediately alerted me about the weak password. However, to my surprise, it doesn’t spam you with a gazillion alerts. While no one likes too many notifications, especially about passwords, it only alerts you during the setup phase. Along with warning about weak passwords, it also notifies about compromised logins.

Using the Watchtower module, I could check my password health and get updates on the availability of passkeys and 2FA. I liked the fact that it highlights websites offering extra layers of security like 2FA.

If you’re an administrator, you can also look for weak or reused passwords among your team that could pose a threat to your company’s assets.

Data Import

1Password lets you import data from other browsers and even previous password managers. I just had to click on the “import” option under “my profile,” and it gave me a list of browsers and other password managers to choose from.

Approach to Common Password Management Challenges

  • Secure Password Storage: It provides encrypted vaults to store complex passwords securely, reducing the risk of data breaches caused by weak or reused passwords.
  • Cross-Platform Accessibility: You can sync passwords across devices and platforms. It ensures you have access to your credentials from anywhere, enhancing productivity without compromising security.
  • Easy Password Generation: The platform automatically generates strong, unique passwords for every account, eliminating the challenge of creating and remembering secure passwords.
  • Reduced Human Error: It fills in login details automatically on websites and apps, reducing manual entry mistakes and ensuring you use accurate credentials every time.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication: 1Password integrates with various MFA solutions, adding an extra layer of security to your accounts and preventing unauthorized access, even if a password is compromised.

Testimonials

Password management is critical for security. Employees were using duplicates and protected Word files containing passwords before moving to 1Password.

Password managers make life easier, more secure. We're all aware that the main problem with passwords is it's hard for users to create strong passwords.

The 1Password interface feels intuitive enough for any user to figure out on their own.

1Password makes complex processes easier and integrates them seamlessly into practice. And, as a result, helps us stay true to Flo’s security and privacy principles.

We have a lot of outdated credentials saved in 1Password, but that’s allowed us to rescue certain situations where otherwise we'd have to contact former employees and have awkward conversations.

Using 1Password was a huge enabler for us to get to this stage – to grow and onboard this many people without the feeling of not knowing what people are doing or how secure we are. That’s not an option, because we’re handling a lot of customer data. I don’t know how I would’ve done it without 1Password.
