NOSH EMR Benefits and Insights

Why use NOSH EMR?

Key differentiators & advantages of NOSH EMR

  • Free and Open Source: Practices can save money by not spending on their practice management software and joining a community of like-minded practitioners for support and cooperation. The system’s Github repository allows users to connect with coders and colleagues to help make the software more beneficial.
  • Customizable: The usefulness of the software expands and shapes to what the practice needs. Its open-source nature means the system can be altered to its core, or users can utilize prebuilt customization features and third-party integrations.
  • Integrated Practice Management: Practices can manage schedules, patients, patient records, inventory, financials and more from one unified platform. Integrations for import/export, notifications and tailorable patient records and patient messaging help physicians, assistants, billers and even patients stay organized.
  • Practice-Specific Records and Charts: Customizable patient records and charts means practices see what they need to, how they want to, speeding up and optimizing treatment. A malleable presentation of patient information lets physicians tailor reports in a way they are comfortable with and as in-depth as they desire.
  • Custom Logins: Four login types enable the platform to be used by all people relevant to a practice: provider, assistant, biller and patient. Each has unique modules and functionalities to allow productivity without compromising the security or integrity of records or data.

Industry Expertise

NOSH is developed and maintained by Michael Chen, a physician in Portland, Oregon. Chen developed the system after being unsatisfied with the offerings of affordable EMR/EHR systems on the market, and launched the first version of NOSH in 2012. It was created to assist smaller clinics, including nonprofits, in organizing their practices.

Key Features

  • Medical Charts: Charts are in-depth, including demographics, active issues, medications, supplements, past encounters and more. It has an internal document creating and handling system that cooperates with the patient portal and an automated reminder and alert system.
  • Medical Records: Customizable reports in records allow for more accurate and relevant reports leading into encounters. Physicians can tailor history of illness, physical examination and review of systems templates to fulfill their needs. Customized electronic forms can be delivered and completed via the patient portal and stored in the patient’s records.
  • Documentation and Inventory: A robust inventory tracking system automatically tallies the use of vaccines and medications and notifies the user when supplies begin to run out. It incorporates supply costing to assist in financial tracking.
  • Login Portals: A patient login lets them communicate with their physician, organize appointments, fill out paperwork and records and set email and SMS reminders. Other portals include provider, biller and assistant for unique access abilities and security.
  • Reporting: Automatically generated reports keep practitioners informed. These include active medical issues, supply reports, etc. Reports can be customized by custom tags or default search criteria.
  • Customization: As a FOSS, it allows for in-depth customization of features, from modules on the dashboard to specific patient forms and documents. It allows for some integrations of third-party software to expand its capabilities.
  • E-Prescribing: Integration with Rcopia by Dr.First allows for prescriptions to be electronically sent and filled. This integration comes at a cost through a separate enrollment.
  • Pediatrics: Specific pediatric records include growth charts, immunizations, vaccinations and well-child checks.
  • Communications: On top of in-platform patient-physician messaging and email/SMS notifications, faxing can be integrated via MetroFax or RingCentral for a cost. The system enables importing PDFS and exporting in PDF or C-CDA format.
  • Claims Management: Claims can be compiled and exported in either PDF or text files for ease of storage or uploading to a claims clearinghouse.
  • Databases: It incorporates four major databases for use of up-to-date terminology, coding and treatments. These databases are SNOMED-CT, CPT, ICD 10 and FDA drug.
